Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Piping Engineer to support piping maintenance, modification and replacement activities at a petroleum refinery in Manali, Chennai. The role involves planning, supervision, contractor coordination, safety monitoring and progress tracking of refinery piping works.
The candidate should have hands-on experience in mechanical planning and supervision in refineries/petrochemical plants, with strong knowledge of piping, mechanical equipment, inspection activities and refinery safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Review and understand piping modification drawings, replacement requirements and inspection work lists.
Identify job locations and coordinate with maintenance and inspection teams before commencing work.
Plan job sequences and coordinate activities to ensure timely completion.
Coordinate with contractors and refinery personnel for pipeline isolation and release.
Identify requirements for blinding, hose connections and flange wedge openings.
Monitor piping replacement and modification activities joint-wise and pipeline-wise.
Follow up with Inspection teams for clearances related to:
Fit-up
Root welding
Final welding
DP testing
Radiography
Stress relieving
Hydrotesting
Maintain continuous site presence during critical activities and ensure safe execution.
Monitor work progress and record activity start/completion times in the Shift Turnover Log Book.
Prepare end-of-shift summaries covering completed welding joints, stress relieving, radiography, hydrotesting and other activities.
Ensure execution is carried out according to approved work lists, applicable standards and refinery procedures.
Monitor contractor performance and provide technical inputs for uninterrupted execution.
Identify resource constraints and coordinate with the concerned CPCL Engineer for resolution.
Coordinate material issuance and collection and ensure specified materials are used for the respective works.
Prepare material requirement plans and communicate requirements to the planning team.
Prepare daily progress/status reports as required.
Coordinate with Inspection, Manufacturing, Maintenance and other refinery departments.
Maintain constant safety vigilance and immediately report and correct safety violations.
Ensure all activities comply with refinery F&S guidelines, safety rules and maintenance procedures.
Planning & Coordination Responsibilities
Understand job objectives and required scope before commencement.
Develop the sequence of activities to achieve timely completion.
Identify critical-path activities and advise contractors on execution plans.
Coordinate with CPCL Maintenance, Inspection and Manufacturing teams.
Obtain necessary technical clarifications before starting work.
Ensure proper shift handover and continuity of ongoing activities.
Maintain accurate documentation and progress records.
Technical Requirements

ASTM, ANSI, API and relevant industry standards
Software Skills
MS Office / MS Excel for reports and documentation.
Primavera Project Planner experience is mandatory/preferred for project planning and scheduling activities.
Educational Qualification & Experience
Option 1 – Engineering Graduate
B.Tech / B.E. / AMIE in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
Option 2 – Diploma
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience.
Relevant Experience
Experience should be in:
Mechanical planning and supervision
Petroleum refineries
Petrochemical plants
Hydrocarbon plant maintenance
Piping maintenance and modification
Similar mechanical execution and supervision assignments
Experience in maintenance of hydrocarbon plants is essential.
General Requirements
Strong understanding of mechanical refinery works.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Good knowledge of refinery equipment and piping systems.
Strong contractor and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
Ability to work in day/night shifts for 12-hour working schedules.
Strong safety awareness and commitment to refinery safety procedures.
Good communication and reporting skills.
Ability to work independently at site and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
Work Environment
The role requires continuous coordination and physical presence at the refinery site. Candidates must be prepared to work 12-hour day/night shifts and follow all applicable refinery safety regulations, procedures and guidelines.
